IDEAS FOR CORNER FIREPLACES FOR COZY VIBES IN ALL SEASONS
So you’ve made the decision to install a corner fireplace. The next question is: Can I have one, please? In essence, the answer is yes. ‘There are so many possibilities these days, you aren’t bound by traditional criteria anymore, anyone can have a corner fireplace,’ interior designer Christina Carleton explains. That’s great news.
1. PLAY WITH PROPORTIONS
In larger spaces, you may increase the proportions of your corner fireplace without risking overpowering the space. This stunning design has been elevated with elegant white panels topped with a large reclaimed wood mantle. Raising the firebox a little is also a good idea; it brings the dancing flames up to eye-line level for those relaxing on the couch… Don’t you think it’s a cozier sight than the television?
2. OPT FOR UNDERSTATED STYLE
Corner fireplaces can feel imposing at times, but there are ways to achieve a more subtle effect if that’s what you’re after. ‘Try a less bold tile, stone, or brick and keep wall paint light to make the space appear larger,’ advises Hillary Quinn, owner of Grace Oak Designs. ‘Painted white bricks add texture and aesthetic appeal to the room without dominating it. You may also consider replacing the mantel with something trendy yet subtle, such as clean lines and natural materials.’
3. MIX IT UP
Contrasting tiles are an excellent way to draw attention to your corner fireplace. We love how the black metro tiles covering the inside of the furnace contrast with the lovely white mantle for a classic yet modern fireplace aesthetic. A pair of sconces creates symmetry and, when turned on, casts a pleasant light – ideal for warmer days when you want a snug feel but not the heat of a raging fire! Becca Interiors created the space, which was shot by Rikki Snyder.
4. THINK OUTSIDE THE HEARTH
This ingenious corner fireplace design was put together. includes an off-center three-sided stove that provides the appearance of a long flat wall and makes the space feel more expansive… With the added bonus of being able to watch flickering flames from any angle. Leather sofas, textured fabrics, and lively house plants provide warmth to the black lacquered brick wall behind, producing the ideal balance of industrial and homey sensations.
5. BE MATERIALISTIC
Consider what materials you want to include into your corner fireplace for example, wood paneling is a wonderful option for covering big surfaces, while patterned tiles provide interest. Both have been used effectively in this case. Tall ceilings are emphasized by extending paneling all the way to the ceiling, while eye-catching tiles draw the attention down. We love how the fireplace tile color has been carried through soft furnishings and walls to provide a coherent sense to an otherwise diverse concept.
6. FACTOR IN FUNCTION
Aside from the obvious heating benefit, a corner fireplace effectively creates a ‘fifth wall’ in a room, which can be extremely useful, as demonstrated in this design by Christina Carleton: ‘The family who lives in this home likes to gather in the evenings, but the dramatic tall ceilings, tile floors, and large windows and doors made warming their living room difficult in winter months, and there was no obvious placement for television, either. We gained an elaborate television mount by installing a corner fireplace.’ It also doesn’t have to be a lot of labor; “we chose a vent-free natural gas insert that required no chimney or structural alterations,” Christina explains.
7. TAKE IT OUTSIDE
We’re all about bringing the outside in, but now it appears to be all about bringing the inside out… It’s all the rage to build a living area on your veranda, complete with an outdoor corner fireplace! Dramatic? ‘We enjoy treating outdoor areas as an extension of the home; they should be pleasant as well as useful, and there’s nothing warmer as a fireplace,’ explains Designer Laura Umansky, founder, and CEO of Laura U Design Collective. Top tip: Make sure your fireplace is covered so you can enjoy it no matter what the weather is like!
8. GO, ROGUE
You don’t have to have a corner in your living room to have a ‘corner’ fireplace… You may make your own with some architectural inspiration. With its dramatic triangular form and smooth tiled surface, this striking design offers a futuristic air. This is one of the coziest and coolest living room designs you’ll ever see.
9. CONSIDER A CORNER STOVE
A standalone corner stove or wood burner may be just as warm as a regular corner fireplace and is a terrific space saving choice if you’re limited on space; they don’t require a surround and can fit into the tiniest of niches. ‘We wanted to showcase the fireplace as a major element, so we constructed a pedestal for it that elevates it up from the floor level,’ designer Regan Baker says. ‘You can now see the flames from the fire while sitting on the sofa, which makes it seem comfortable and homely,’ she explains.
10. TILE ALL OVER FOR MAXIMUM IMPACT
We say don’t knock a beautifully tiled corner fireplace until you’ve tried it. This eye-catching design demonstrates that it may be done in a wonderfully polished and not excessively intense manner. ‘We picked an abstract wave concrete tile from Tabarka Studio that fit into the old mood of the space while still adding a modern touch,’ designer Samantha Blake adds.
11. TAKE INSPIRATION FROM NATURE
Natural stone has an innately pleasant and comfortable feel to it, and a corner fireplace is an ideal way to incorporate it into a room. We love the blend of rustic and modern in this stunning concept – designed by Mindy Gayer and shot by Vanessa Lentine – where a simple mantel allows the stone to speak for itself, while dark colors, natural textures, and lush foliage all allude to the great outdoors.
HOW MUCH SPACE DOES A CORNER FIREPLACE REQUIRE?
This is dependent on the design of the corner electric fireplace you choose. Some are placed at a 45-degree angle across the room’s corner. ‘The disadvantage of this style of corner fireplace is that you will lose a significant amount of wall on each side of the corner you pick, resulting in a considerably smaller room overall,’ explains Claire Beard, Founder of Claire Lynn Home.
You’ll also need to consider fire safety while placement, which may necessitate more space; ‘The fireplace should be situated at least 36 inches from any flammable wall that does not have protection.’ If they have a protective coating, this can be decreased to 12 inches’.
If your space allows, more contemporary, box-like shapes offer a space-saving option. These may be placed squarely on a wall’s corner and frequently have glass sides to provide the sense of greater space.
HOW DO YOU UPDATE A BRICK CORNER FIREPLACE?
If you’re fortunate enough to have an existing brick corner fireplace, a simple renovation may be all that’s required to make old and new work in perfect harmony. ‘It’s completely acceptable to paint over the bricks; simply use a high pigmented sealant first, then cover with heat resistant paint in your preferred color – black or white always looks beautiful,’ explains Fire & Saw founder Daniel Morris. It doesn’t have to be expensive or difficult; painting bricks is actually easier than painting a wall since they’re more forgiving. Just be sure you use a good brush; it will make the work a lot simpler and more fun.’ You might also attempt whitewashing a fireplace for a do-it-yourself project that yields spectacular effects.
