Ramadan is one of the holiest months in Islam, where all Muslims fast. It’s a month for mercy and forgiveness from ALLAH; Ramadan is also a time to see how you can be a better person by following an example. In Ramadan, there is anything called Taraweeh, which consists of extra naat, Quran reading and poetry. It is a prayer recited by Muslims after the Isha Salah between the night of Ramadan and sunrise.
It’s been narrated from Abu Hurayrah who said: “The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said ‘Whoever observes fasts during the month of Ramadan out of sincere faith, and hoping to attain Allah’s rewards, then all his past sins will be forgiven.'” [Bukhari: 1865]
Iftar is the meal with which Muslims break their fast at sunset. It usually contains dates and water. The Iftar is not only a source of nutrition for Muslims, but it also brings people together to give thanks to ALLAH for giving them something so unique such as Ramadan.
Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) narrated that she asked the Prophet about the virtue of observing fast. He said: “It is a means of controlling your passions” She further asked: What about abstinence after breaking fast?” He replied, “It atones for the sins committed during the month of fasting.” [Muslim]

Some Muslims also express their gratitude towards ALLAH by reading the Quran at Suhour, which is before Fajr’s prayer. Quran recitation in Ramadan is very special because it has extra rewards; this is because more people listen to it due to its connection with Taraweeh’s prayers.
Fasting has many health benefits as well. According to studies, fasting can reduce the risk of cancers like breast cancer and colon cancer. It also lowers cholesterol levels, decreasing your chances of cardiovascular diseases, thus showing another effect of fasting on both mind and body.
Although Ramadan is a time for the youth, it’s important to remember that it’s not a time for them to misbehave and do whatever they please. The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said; “Whoever does not have control over his stomach is not of us.”
The purpose of Ramadan is to help us become better Muslims to live a life by the teachings of Islam. By following the Sunnah of the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم and keeping away from sin, we can make the most out of this blessed month. Ramadan is also when Allah showers His mercy on us and forgives our sins if we repent sincerely. So let’s all intend to do our best this Ramadan and ask Allah to help us become better Muslims. Ameen.
